Experience
Learning how to learn is something many people seem to need help with. This is a strength of mine. I am able to help students figure out where their interests lie and how to tap into them in order to learn. It has been my experience that students' interests include things which are not covered through traditional classroom instruction. This could be problematic if their interests are not clearly compatible with academic expectations. My history has helped me to realize that when a person is aware of their interests, it is easier to find the place where the two overlap. I take an individualized approach to tutoring, customizing the material for each student I work with. I try to help them find context in their areas of interest for the subject matter which they are studying. Finding that context usually makes all of the difference in the learning process. I also know the value of expanding my knowledge base and getting out of my comfort zone. After spending my formative years in Pittsburgh, PA, where all of my schooling from grade school through college took place in a very small area, I moved to New York City. I spend quite a bit of time learning the city. Getting out of a comfort zone is something I encourage for all my students.
