Experience
After attending Chatham University I became a teacher in the Words Without Walls program, specifically in a rehabilitation center for addicted mothers (Sojourner House). Sojourner House is often an option for drug offenders instead of jail. The residents there are allowed to keep their children during their six month recovery. I also teach at the Allegheny County Jail. I help students develop creative work: fictional narrative, memoir, poetry. I also help them to develop oratory and reading skills. Each class works towards putting together an anthology at the end of the semester, so students see their final works in print. I create the curriculum, syllabi, and lesson plans for all classes. I’ve also lead creative writing workshops in Kimberly, South Africa. Writing and literacy are skill not many community members possess. I visited a “book club” in a poorer township, to support reading, provide books and money, and discuss the importance of literacy and art. I have taught literature courses at Chatham University (Shakespeare, Food Writing, Fairy tale literature) I am well versed in the different teaching approaches to the humanities and offer a unique background to this position.
