Jo S.
Private tutor in Pittsburgh, PA
Education
I am a PhD candidate in English at Duquesne University specializing in British literature and the history of medicine. I completed my Masters degree at Carnegie Mellon University with a 3.95 GPA.
Experience
I currently teach literature and writing at Duquesne University to students of all backgrounds and majors. I have taken classes in and have taught reading comprehension, critical thinking, composition and writing, Shakespeare, early American literature, civil war literature, Romanticism, Victorian lit, modernism, postmodernism, world lit, and contemporary literature. In fact, this year I won our university's teaching award for graduate students! In addition to my experience in the college classroom, I have tutored students in middle school and high school on and off since I was in high school myself. My very first tutoring job was when I was a sophomore in high school; I was asked to help my 7th grade neighbor who struggled with ADD focus while completing his homework assignments. I continued to work with him and his siblings as they continued through their high school and college prep courses. As an undergraduate and through my graduate study, I have tutored several students with everything from basic writing and grammar, reading comprehension, organization and time management, AP literature classes, SAT prep, and history classes. I have even given piano lessons to children as young as 6!

Hobbies
In addition to my academic expertise, I studied music for several years and play the piano and harp. I'm also an avid equestrian and was the captain of our team in college. As with most English majors, I love to read, but I don't limit myself to the classics. Harry Potter remains one of my favorite book series, and I often spend my downtime reading comic books or playing video games. I love to cook, though my creativity often surpasses my skill, and my husband and I have shared more than the occasional failed experiment! But as with all creative skills (especially writing!) you can only learn through experimentation and revision.
