Miriam W.
Private tutor in Pittsburgh, PA
Education
English Writing Major at University of Pittsburgh, expected May 2016. GPA: 3.6 (in good academic standing)
Experience
As part of a sorority, I offered my editing and writing skills in order to help my peers interpret and understand certain literature, and I absolutely LOVED helping them edit their papers. On average, the students I helped received at least one letter grade higher than they normally would have, and many have come back to me for further help. I've taken many higher level writing and English literature classes-- including classes on British, American, and Non-fiction writing. By volunteering in my community, I have gained hands-on experience with youth and young adults, and have encountered and overcome the challenges one may be exposed to. I want to tutor because, at age 20, I distinctly remember what it was like to be a kid, but I'm also starting to learn the responsibilities of becoming an adult; I want to help and prepare kids for what they can expect in college, and how they can make the most of their education.

Hobbies
I care about people immensely and will go out of my way to make them feel secure, happy, and well-attended to. I love kids because I recognize the potential in each and every one of them, even if they do not. They have their entire lives in front of them, and even though they might not realize the gravity of this situation, I do, and want to inspire them to be the best they can be. Encouraging critical reading skills, in addition to writing, is imperative. Though many children have been dissuaded from fostering their love of writing, I want to show them how important having competent communication and critical thinking skills are.
