Experience
The most important characteristics that an effective teacher can have are patience and the ability to positively reinforce his or her students. Throughout my teaching career and time spent as the mother of a dyslexic child, I have learned that learning is, more often than not, a challenging process that forces the student to change their way of thinking. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to be patient with my students so that I can understand their needs and tailor the lesson plan accordingly. Positive reinforcement is important because it builds confidence, a key factor in motivating a student to be successful. I have had the opportunity to develop my teaching skills as a homeschool teacher for my son. In college, I worked for an adult literacy program helping adults improve their reading. At all stages of my life, I have actively searched for opportunities to have one-on-one tutoring sessions with any struggling students. Most of my experience is with reading, writing, and literary analysis, as these are my favorite subjects to teach. However, I am willing to help with any subject, including standardized test preparation. My master's degree is from the University of Pittsburgh in English. My list of hobbies is populated by cooking, reading, and watching movies. I also thoroughly enjoy traveling to new places.
