Experience

BACKGROUND- I grew up in a small town in Louisiana, and my family moved to Texas when I was a teenager. My husband and I moved to the Pittsburgh almost a year ago. I am currently working as a grant writer for a nonprofit organization that offers financial assistance and educational and career development programs for promising graduate students who hope to become professors. WRITING AND EDITING- As an undergraduate at the University of Texas, Austin, I worked as a teaching assistant, specializing in writing, for multiple college-level courses including Astronomy, English, and Political Science. I also worked as a writing consultant at the Undergraduate Writing Center. In that position, I helped students with any step in the writing process, from brainstorming to final proofreading. I helped with projects ranging from literature reviews, to engineering project plans, to graduate school applications and materials, and more. POLITICAL SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, HISTORY, AND PHILOSOPHY- I have a Master's degree in politics, with an emphasis on classical political theory and political philosophy from Brandeis University and a Bachelor's degree in government, with an emphasis on American politics and political theory, and a minor in history from the University of Texas, Austin. STUDY SKILLS, ORGANIZATION, AND TIME MANAGEMENT- Many students struggle with how to make time to study, as well as juggle other extracurricular activities. As an experienced tutor, I have helped many students to not only carve out enough time to study but to learn how to make the most of that time by developing effective study skills. COLLEGE APPLICATION MATERIALS, PERSONAL STATEMENTS, RESUMES, ADMISSIONS AND SCHOLARSHIP ESSAYS, GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATIONS- During my time as a writing consultant at the University of Texas, I gained extensive experience with helping students prepare application materials. Additionally, I worked in the admissions department of the University of Texas, where I reviewed and processed hundreds of college applications. In my current role as a grant writer, I read and evaluate hundreds of scholarship and fellowship essays to match applicants to donors. In terms of my own experience, I applied to graduate school and got into Brandeis University on academic scholarship. So, I've been on all sides of the application process- I've successfully applied for college, graduate school, and scholarships; I've helped students prepare materials for their own applications; and I've evaluated application materials in multiple roles.

I absolutely love to cook, so I started a food and lifestyle blog. It has inspired me to cook so many new and exciting dishes. I also just bought a new professional camera, so I've been having a blast learning how to use it.
