Experience
I spent two semesters of my Master's studies as a Teaching Assistant for two courses offered in the Department of Geology at Pitt. One semester I taught and graded for a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) course, and one semester I guided the lab element of a course in Computational Geomporphology (Earth Science). My most valuable and rewarding experiences I had in both cases were working closely with interested students who were struggling with the material. The role of a teacher is not only to explain ideas, but also to teach them how much they are capable of learning. For the lab I taught in geomorphology, the professor and decided that we would structure most of the assignments around using the Python programming language. Most of the students had never had little to no experience with computer programming, but the most meaningful part of teaching this class was noticing how the students would always be moving toward a place where they are using the skills they have learned to build on those very skills. Mathematics and programming are learned in steps and stages, and can be difficult if understanding is not constructed up from a solid foundation. Teaching was one of the most interesting and rewarding experiences of my time as a graduate student. I've also spent some of my time as a graduate student improving my math skills. Taking courses in Differential Equations, Signals and Systems, Complex Variables, and Analysis 101.

Hobbies
In my free time, I enjoy keeping up with world affairs and reading about their history. It's interesting to explore the details of a story and all of the many perspectives that we can read online. I enjoy reading fiction and non-fiction and listening to music as well. I spend some of my free time tinkering with my computer and sometimes playing with new programming languages or ideas in math. I also enjoy tabletop and video gaming. Settlers, Power Grid, Resistance, Coup, Minecraft, and Role-Playing Games.
