Private tutor in Pittsburgh, PA

Education

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Medical Doctorate, 2016 University of Washington, Bachelors of Science, 2010 Major: Biochemistry Minors: Chemistry, Philsophy, Bioethics MCAT: 35 (13 on physical sciences-98th percentile nationally, 95th percentile over all subjects)

Experience

4-years paid staff tutor at CLUE: Center for Learning and Undergraduate Enrichment at University of Washington. Annual student census was over 40,000 students, served as a drop-in chemistry tutor. Also held roles in leadership, and upheld exam review lectures as well. Private tutoring with various high school students and college students over SAT chemistry, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Greatest strength I have as a tutor: Having tutored in both private and large-scale public tutoring settings, I have learned from my students that my greatest asset is my energy and my usage of analogies that make them laugh but also help them understand the material. Most who are requesting help from a tutor have anxiety over the subject and to be honest, I personally dislike making teaching a very serious/intense activity. I think it detracts from the educational gain because of increased stress and anxiety. A more laid-back interaction in my experience helps the student open up and be willing to be aggressive with the questions they ask, which helps determine where their gaps in knowledge are. 2nd Greatest strength as a tutor: I understand what it feels to struggle in the subject. Chemistry/Science actually was not my strength when I first began learning the subject. My first high school chemistry exam, was a 62%-will never forget. But, I spent a substantial time on my own mastering the knowledge that I would be able to help others understand it, rather than being able to answer test questions when I need to. I have excelled on my entrance exam for medical school that tests chemistry and the sciences, however I like to believe that I am more than my test score. Acing a test versus teaching a subject are two completely different subjects. Result: I am not one to say "This is really easy". It isn't for most. And that's why I am here to help!
