I am a Civil Engineering graduate student and research assistant at the University of Pittsburgh. I started tutoring by helping out younger family members and family friends with their school work. I started the Phd program at the University of Pittsburgh in Spring of 2014. Since then I've acted as a teaching assistant, helping undergraduates with their homework and understanding their lectures. I've guest lectured for professors; and all of the aforementioned things have helped me to realize that I have a passion for teaching and tutoring. I have been tutoring professionally since 2013. I realized something else as well. A lot of teachers and tutors teach so that their students will do well on tests. Especially when it comes to math or physics--they often teach their students silly tricks for solving problems (that have no physical or mathematical meaning), or teach them HOW to do something but never WHY. They fail to teach their students concepts. Students can do the work, but fail to understand the significance of what they are doing, and how to apply it to other topics or the real world. I believe learning and understanding are of paramount importance. Grades are important as well, but never at the expense of learning.
